Time to pick something new up..best caliber?

Ok gimer's,,, its that time to pick up another gun.. This time I'm looking for the "Black Rifle" style. I am so confused with the different setups, and such.
But I'm sure I will find my answer through different searches.

My questions are

Whats the best caliber for a shtf scenario? .308, .223, 30-06????

Make, models, whats your opinions on the type of rifle, keep in mind the wife will use this too, or I will buy here one too, I would like to get the same for both of us.

Thanls

My 2C is .308. Get a new 22in bbl Saiga with the wood furniture.
Sweet.

Just curios, why do you think the .308?

Re: Time to pick something new up..best caliber?

if wife is recoil sensitive go with .223, although they can be maintenance intensive. my own preference is .308/7.62x51 in a heavy rifle = m1a/fal. heavier/mass battle rifle equals less felt recoil and i find both those platforms less maintenance intensive{700-1000 rounds between cleanings} just my experince and opinion...

Just purchased this one, in .308 but I gotta order a flat top upper, that carry handle has got to go.

.308 is the same as 7.62x51 NATO used in the M-14. Proven man stopper and will turn some cover into concealment.

.308 operates at higher pressures than 7.62x51 and 7.62x51 needs a little more headspacing.

But yes, they are practically the same.

Agreed, Mr. Meticulous, but for this thread, the diff is not worth mentioning.

take wife to a range that rents rifles. have her shoot ar-15/.223, ak-variant/7.62x39,and a heavy .308 battle rifle. get feed back, cause if she won't touch the one you bought its yours and that might be your last purchase. also, getting her involved in now high dollar purchases and onboard makes it easier, my experience, when you want to add to the collection again. you might be pleasantly surprised.

Re: Time to pick something new up..best caliber?

settled on 7.62x39/ak for my own wife. working her up to my .308's , muzzle blast and noise from 16.25'' barrel turns her off-whole other discussion. we both have bum shoulders do to work injuries, so you have to compensate for recoil and no issues here. good to know your soul mate has your back if its just the 2 of you in the middle of the night or in the middle of nowhere.

Re: Time to pick something new up..best caliber?

shot placement is important, but .30 caliber rounds and mag capacity will do a number on concealment..

GSM/MM 02-27-2009 04:37 PM

Re: Time to pick something new up..best caliber?

only downside i see for 7.62x39 is availability, so stock up on it if that is the route you go.

Under $2000?. You will have lots of choices. Make sure you can find quality ammo at a "reasonable" price first. Good Luck.

Get a nice AR-15 .223 carbine, the best you can afford. You both will love it.

I had a Colt full stock heavy barrel carbine once, before my wife unit found out

it is accurate as heck, doesn't kick and kills white tail deer dead as a doornail.

All AR-15 makes are good. There are a lot to be had in the $1000 - $1400 range. Ruger mini-14 is a fine rifle in .223, and mini-30 in 7.62x39......these Rugers are about $700-850,

I'm not much of an AK fan......they are o.k. but way overpriced for the low quality construction that they are.

I think the Ruger mini 14/30 is quite a nice rifle for the price.....too bad Ruger will not offer a new design that uses the AR magazines....(I wrote to them suggesting this idea....)

I think the AK's are basically "throw away" guns that can be shoved in the mud and still keep on shooting, stamped steel, designed for short lives. but way way better than some of the early m16's that found their way in to the boys hands in portions of Asia back when

Sure EE they are great! Freedom1 stated something his wife would be comfortable with also so my first thought is always AR-15, and thats just from my experience with my own wife and her friends. They love shooting AR-15's and shoot well with them.

aren't scars hard to find at the moment and expensive? 30-30 marlin lever action, my politically correct gun, i put twenty rounds thru it and i'm pretty much done with it for the day/recoil...however, then i can pickup my m1a scout and shoot the rest of the day comfortably til i run out of ammunition...this rifle has seen 500-600 rounds in an afternoon of shooting when it was cheaper put away and repeated.on another afternoon.

used to be able to get 200 rd battle packs of 7.62x51 for 19.99...was cheaper to shoot than 45 acp.

sweet yeah, but after seeing what they were going for and figuring they'd be banned before the price came down i opted for a dsa fal para and spent the rest on ammo.

Leadfoot, I have mostly handguns, I do have a ruger 10/22, and a remington 870 , but mostly handguns.

My wife seems to like the M&P 15 rifle,, what do you guys think. Any one tried or have one?

The NRA magazine did an T&E on it not too long ago and the guy testing it loved it. Very well built and accurate, and while not cheap it was a sound value considering how many high dollar upgrades come standard on it.
If I diden't have my trusty National Match Colt I would definately be looking into one, either that or an Armalite.
